Han embroidery is one of the traditional embroidery crafts with distinctive local characteristics in China. It is a representative ethnic craft of Han culture, and people usually refer to Su embroidery, Shu embroidery, Xiang embroidery, and Guang embroidery as the four famous embroidery styles. Kaizhou Han embroidery is a type of Shu embroidery (also known as Sichuan embroidery) with a history of more than 1800 years. It has been listed in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage. Due to its bright colors, distinct layers, and strong contrast, it is deeply loved by the masses.

Kaizhou is located at the end of a small tributary of the Yangtze River, at the junction of the southern slope of Daba Mountain and parallel ridges and valleys. It has distinct four seasons, mild climate, abundant rainfall, and is suitable for planting mulberry trees and raising silkworms. The silk industry is developed, and the silk civilization gave birth to Kaizhou Han embroidery. According to historical records, the earliest king of Shu in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cancong, had already learned how to breed silkworms. The Book of Later Han also records: "The work of female workers covers the world in clothing." Due to cultural and geographical origins, since Liu Bei entered Sichuan during the Han Dynasty, Han embroidery in Kaizhou has integrated the strengths of various embroidery styles from the north and south, creating distinctive local characteristics of "new embroidery" masterpieces.

The needlework of Han embroidery in Kaizhou is different from other embroidery styles. It adopts a set of needlework techniques including laying, leveling, weaving, weaving, spacing, pressing, cable, blending, coiling, covering, padding, and buttoning. The main form of expression is "flat gold clip embroidery", which is layered and color broken, with clear layers and strong contrast. According to the different textures and patterns of the embroidery, various needlework techniques can be flexibly used, such as pad needle embroidery, lay needle embroidery, patterned needle embroidery, wandering needle embroidery, closed needle embroidery, moistened needle embroidery, raised needle embroidery, gold stacking embroidery, double-sided embroidery, etc. The embroidered works are rich in a strong sense of three dimensionality and stand out in the embroidery industry.

Hu Xiaoni is the inheritor of Han embroidery skills in Kaizhou, with a family background in Han embroidery skills. At the age of 8, Hu Xiaoni followed her mother to learn Chinese embroidery techniques. Over the course of more than 40 years of her embroidery career, her skills have gradually improved, and she continues to innovate on the basis of inheriting tradition. The exquisite artworks she embroiders are breathtaking. In 2009 and 2011, Hu Xiaoni and her younger brother Hu Xiaozhao jointly established Chongqing Ancient and Modern Court Artworks Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Ancient Heart Fragrance Artworks Co., Ltd., and established the brand of "Ancient and Modern Court". The business mainly focuses on Han embroidery, supplemented by plant paintings and Paper Cuttings, and integrates Kaizhou Han embroidery into practical appliances, embarking on a development path of Kaizhou Han embroidery combining tradition and modernity.

Inherit classics and create classics. Hu Xiaozhao, who is good at innovation, has incorporated more elements of Kaizhou Han embroidery. Using the beautiful scenery of Kaizhou as the original image, he has created a large number of Han embroidery works with bright colors, exquisite compositions, and unique creativity, which have the "Kaizhou symbol". In recent years, the "Ancient and Modern Court" has trained more than 2000 Han embroidery women, organized the traditional craft "big hands holding small hands" action, and cultivated a group of skilled talents in Kaizhou. Hu Xiaoni's "Ancient and Modern Court · Kaizhou Han Embroidery Table Lamp" won a silver award at the 2019 China Tourism Commodity Competition. The product 'Kaizhou Han Embroidery' has also gone abroad, with multiple exhibitions in countries such as France and Russia, and has been exported to multiple countries including Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
